All French Island landholders and residents are encouraged to become members of the
French Island Community Association (FICA). FICA provides a strong, united voice and
works on behalf of all islanders to maintain a sustainable and unique environment.
Why join?
The island is administered by government departments. It is vital that islanders have a voice in the decision-making process. FICA is that voice.
The island has no municipal income, but grants are available from State and Federal governments for worthwhile projects. Such grants are more likely to be made available to an association than an individual.
FICA gets things done. The shelter on the Stony Point jetty and the tennis court are the direct result of FICA's work.
FICA manages the tip. It is not unreasonable for those who use the tip to pay for that use, yet so far FICA has managed to avoid tip fees. The membership fee represents excellent value for money for the use of the tip and the Stony Point shelter, if for no other reason.
If FICA is seen to be strong, capable and responsible, the chance of the island merging with a neighbouring municipality may be reduced. A merger would result in rates being charged and the intrusion of municipal politics.
French Island is unique. The price is vigilance and membership to a strong association that can fairly claim to represent the whole island community.
