There is no regular police presence or ambulance service on the island. French Island has a Country Fire Authority (CFA) branch run by a group of hard-working volunteers. There is one fire engine stationed permanently on the island, next to the Community Hall on Tankerton Rd. CFA volunteers can respond to emergencies when requested.

However, in the case of emergency - for fire, ambulance or police - you should always call 000 first.

If further help is required from the community or CFA members, phone Spectrum on 9920 8083.

Additional help may include supplying lights for night-time helicopter landings or providing first aid while waiting for the ambulance.

For non-urgent help, you can also call: A visitor information brochure and the French Island Emergency Management Plan are available at

French Island is serviced by the air ambulance, which is very expensive, so it is advisable to have appropriate ambulance cover.

When calling for the ambulance, make sure you know the address of the property. If possible have the GPS coordinates for an area close by where the air ambulance can land.

All bushland residents should have a personal fire plan.

The French Island CFA hosts annual information sessions which give concrete advice on this topic.

The CFA is also happy to visit individual properties to further aid in the development of fire plans.

As for all of Victoria, fire bans and other instructions issued by the CFA should be followed.
