EMERGENCY SERVICES

EMERGENCY SERVICES
There is no regular police presence or ambulance service on the island. French Island has a Country Fire Authority (CFA) branch run by a group of hard-working volunteers. There is one fire engine stationed permanently on the island, next to the Community Hall on Tankerton Rd. CFA volunteers can respond to emergencies when requested.

In the case of an emergency, always call 000 first for fire, ambulance or police. If you require additional assistance/support from the local French Island CFA Brigade, then please ask the operator to also page the Brigade.

Please see Helicopter Landing Procedures to help with ensuring your property is able to safely accommodate a helicopter. It is also important to know your property street address.

Information relating to emergencies and warnings can be found at the VicEmergency web site and the Emergency+ phone app. These resources are also valuable for accessing preparedness and recovery information related to emergencies.

VicEmergency is a centralised website for Victorians to find emergency information and warnings. Information can also be accessed via the VicEmergency hotline (1800 226 226).

Emergency+ is a smartphone app that provides key phone numbers for the emergency services and displays the GPS coordinates of your location so you can read it out to the emergency operator. This is a useful tool to assist locating and directing emergency responders on French Island due to challenges with identifying specific locations.

For non-urgent help, you can also call: A visitor information brochure and the French Island Emergency Management Plan are available at https://www.emv.vic.gov.au/publications/french-island-emergency-management-plan.

AMBULANCE SERVICES
French Island is serviced by the air ambulance, which is very expensive, so it is advisable to have appropriate ambulance cover.

When calling for the ambulance, make sure you know the address of the property. If possible have the GPS coordinates for an area close by where the air ambulance can land.

FIRE PLANS
All bushland residents should have a personal fire plan.

The French Island CFA hosts annual information sessions which give concrete advice on this topic.

The CFA is also happy to visit individual properties to further aid in the development of fire plans.

As for all of Victoria, fire bans and other instructions issued by the CFA should be followed.
