FRENCH ISLAND CRICKET CLUB
|
The French Island Cricket Club, located on Tankerton Rd, was established more than 100
years ago and has been associated with the Mornington Peninsular Cricket Association
since its inception in the mid-1960s. The island usually fields two teams each week of the
season. On most weekends one team will play at home. The season usually begins on the first
Saturday in October and finishes on the last weekend of March.
New members, supporters and volunteers are always welcome. It is a great place to meet
socially.

FRENCH ISLAND CRAFT GROUP
|
The French Island Craft Group began in 2002 as a way for locals to meet and share
their art and craft making skills. This has included paper making from natural
fibres, basket weaving, mosaic, candle making and felting. Occasional off-island
excursions to learn new skills have been a feature of the group. The craft group
meets on an ad-hoc basis. All are welcome, especially those willing to teach a
new craft or advance our skills! Contact Alison on 5980 1287.

FRENCH ISLAND LANDCARE
|
French Island Landcare is committed to improving properties on the island by tackling
land protection problems such as the water quality in dams and creeks, salinity, erosion,
weed invasions and pest animals. The group is also interested in more sustainable land
management, including protection of remnant vegetation, re-vegetation with plants native
to French Island and improvement of pasture management.
French Island Landcare is on hand to provide advice about locally indigenous plants,
which are best suited to French Island's environment and therefore grow well. The group
is happy to provide plant lists, books and other resources to help plan revegetation
projects large and small. They will happily visit properties to provide specific advice.
Recently, the group set up a nursery, providing indigenous stock at low prices.
French Island Landcare's greatest strength is its ability to tap into State and
Commonwealth grants as well as other community/environmental support schemes. It can
secure funding for fencing subsidies, tubestock, stakes and guards and herbicide for
members. Being a part of the Bass Coast Landcare Network allows French Island LandCare
to access some regional funding for common issues such as salinity.
French Island Landcare has a small committee of volunteers who coordinate activities
and provide information to members. All members are encouraged to participate in
Landcare activities which include seed collecting, helping out at the Landcare nursery,
community planting days, wildflower wanders and other social events.
Field days and workshops on topics of interest are also an important part of the group's
annual activities.
The group has a regular section in the community magazine 'The Pinnacle' to keep members
up-to-date with progress. Other notices and bulletins are mailed out as necessary.
